Expiration Date
The GEICO insurance company puts out some humorous commercials. My favorite commercial is called “Aunt Infestation.” The commercial plays on the word “infestation” using it to describe a house full of aunts [people] instead of ants [insects]. In the commercial, a couple is sitting in the kitchen of their new home when one of the aunts, standing in front of the open refrigerator, says this about several of the items, “Expired…expired…expired!”
Many of the products you and I frequently use have a date stamped on it. Depending on the product, the date might be an “expiration” date,” a “best used by” date, or a “sell by” date. The purpose of the date is to notify the consumer of possible safety concerns with a product that might be out of date or close to being out of date. Just to be clear, the date is just that, a date. I am more of a “sniff-test” person. Nevertheless, for others the title of this article sent you into a cold sweat just thinking about products being passed their “date.”
But while the products you and I depended on daily have expiration dates, I am reminded of a wonderful truth that has no expiration date-God’s love endures forever. God’s love has no shelf-life, no “expiration” date, or no “best used by” date. God’s love is eternal; God’s love endures forever.
Psalm 136 is a wonderful reminder of God’s eternal love. The psalmist writes,
“Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.
Give thanks to the God of gods, for his steadfast love endures forever, to him who alone does great wonders, for his steadfast love endures forever, to him who by understanding made the heavens, for his steadfast love endures forever” (Psalm 136:1-5)
The Psalm contains twenty-six verses and all of which speak of the eternal reality of God’s love. Every day we are bombarded with counterfeit love. This is a one-way kind of love. This kind of love has an expiration date, it has a “best used by date. But God’s love is eternal! And thus, we will never hear God say, “Expired…expired…expired!”
“God’s steadfast love endures forever!”
God bless,
