God Speaks

The Bible says: “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world” (Hebrew 1:1-2 ESV; Emphasis added). In times past God spoke in dreams and visions using nature, miraculous signs and wonders, fire, trumpets, a fleece, the casting of lots, angels and his prophets. According to the writer of Hebrews, God speaks in the present by his Son. Specifically, God speaks to us today through the Holy Spirit, the Bible, prayer, circumstances, and the church (other believers) to reveal himself, his will, his purposes, and his ways.

The fact the Creator speaks to his creation should create in us a sense of awe. When we read the Bible, our approach should be one of holy expectation. God speaks to us through his Word; Scripture is transformative. Therefore, as God speaks to us through his Word, allow the Word to penetrate, saturate, guide and transform lives.

God speaks through prayer. Prayer aligns our lives with God’s already established will and purpose. Prayer is designed to adjust our lives to his will, not God’s will to our lives. As we pray and God speaks through our prayers, we experience God in a more intimate way, creating in us a deep desire to know, love and obey him more.

Do you recognize the uncommon in the midst of the common? Do you recognize the supernatural in the midst of the natural? Do you recognize the extraordinary in the midst of the ordinary? In the midst of the ordinary, the burning bush, Moses notice something extraordinary. The bush was burning, but it was not being consumed. Moses turned aside from the routine of his day, God spoke in the midst of his circumstances, Moses’s life was changed. Be sensitive to the work of God around you.     When you experience the uncommon in the common, it may be God speaking.
