“Wishy Washy” Faith
December 2025
“Wishy washy” faith is dangerous. Generally speaking, “wishy washy” faith is a compromising faith. Compromise is to make concessions or accommodations for someone who does not agree with a certain set of standards or rules. Compromise does not typically involve wholesale capitulation to cultural ways or ideas but presents itself in a subtle, non-threatening way. Christians hear the many calls of the culture to compromise. The “fleeting pleasures of sin” (Hebrews 11:25), “hollow and deceptive philosophy” (Colossians 2:8), and “the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life” (1 John 2:16) cry out to each of us tempting us to compromise our walk with the Lord by violating his holy and righteous standards.
Compromises can be good and right. For example, in the context of marriage compromises are essential. Daniel and his three friends worked out a compromise with the Babylonian official concerning their diet (Daniel 1:8-14). The Bible, however, makes crystal clear that God does not approve compromising his standards and commands.
Let’s get practical. How do we avoid the temptation of “wishy washy” faith?
- Christian, you must be aware of the ongoing struggle with flesh and spirit and always choose the side of God (Romans 8:6-9).
- Christian, you are called to be firm in your faith, relying on the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit.
- Christian, you are to actively pursue a deeper relationship with God. This involves consistent prayer, immersing ourselves in the truths of God’s Word, and fellowship with other believers through the local church.
- Christian, you must prioritize God’s commands and standards over your personal desires, regardless of how difficult and uncomfortable that might be.
- Christian, you must be careful to live out your biblical values. It is pointless to know and speak the truth if we do not live in the truth. There is no room for hypocrisy.
Christians must not be “wishy washy” about our faith but be solidly committed to God’s ways. The better we know God, the better you and I can resist the temptation to compromise.
“Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and he will draw near to you.” (James 4:7b, 8a, ESV)
